Since a number of questions seem to be reoccurring in e-mails I thought it apt to include then in the forum post itself.
1) Who takes the images?
Ideally, multiple people in the same area have interest and in turn can assist each other in taking images.
If this is not the case images can be self taken (with timer or other mechanism) or even taken as a short
video clip and then the still can be pulled from there.
2) Why don't I take the images?
1) feasibility : If I were to be taking the pictures the project would only be accessible to people who are accessible to me.
Having the expectation of provided images allows the people involved to be anywhere around the globe. I do however make
an effort to put people involved in contact with someone who can facilitate them, if they are unable to make such
arrangements on their own.
2) liability : Current law in US in particular is that if someone takes a photograph, they need a photograph release form
which documents that you had the persons consent. If the image is taken by the person or under the instruction of the
person in the image, consent is assumed. While this seems like a small factor, that is multiple documents for each person
and with the potential of thousands of people involved in any given sequence, if I did not structure projects in a way which
avoided the photographic release documents, that would result in hundreds of thousands of pages for every show.
3) Is there any compensation?
Everyone involved will receive a copy of the piece (and subsequent versions of the piece if they so desire).
The works of this nature are not sold... and so there is no capital made from such a project.
It's a communal piece so people involved are given credit for the role they take (or they can choice to be anonymous).
4) Some of the poses seem a bit difficult to hold, how would you suggest I strike them?
Well remember images can be rotated... so figure out what's the best way to hold your body into that shape for a photo.
Video clips can be recorded in place of stills and the still frame can be taken from that sequence.
If feasible, images can also be taken from above with the posed adjusted to laying down on one's side.
Basically the shape is what is key. If your image is close but not quite right, I will attempt to adjust the pose slightly in photoshop.
If for any reason your image needs to be altered in such a way, a copy of the modified image will be sent back to you for approval.
Thanks much,
-Mike
