I use both terms depending on who I am chatting/emailing as to what term they understand as my interest in being/going clothes free and the lifestyle I enjoy.

` What difference does it make as to what term we use, everyone has thier own favourite expression they use but it all comes down to we like to get our kit off/we like to be bare/naked/nude/clothes free. Lets keep it known as the way we like to express out interest and keep our bodies free.

`I just like being naked whenever I can which for the time being is only when I go to bed. It is more natural to be naked.

`Why can't you be both!! The terms are so closely related it's not funny. Myself I guess I'm a naturist. Because I love being naked out doors and do it every chance I have weather at a resort camp or deserted area where I can park my rig for the weekend.

`To be honest, I don't really like most words ending in "-ist". They tend to be political, factional-ist, or for instant labelling. A body is his or her personal property, and everyone should have the freedom to clothe it, or not. At least "naturist" sounds "natural", whilst "nudist" implies being "different" or "non-conformist"? It doesn't happen very often, but if someone objects to my skin, that's their problem, not mine.

`I think naturist is just a cooked up term invented by some nudists in efforts to differentiate themselves from the stigma associated with being a nudist.
I view the difference between the two terms as nothing more than a state of mind. Both nudists and naturists like to be nude. For a nudist, the drive is to be clothing free. Plain and simple. They like to be nude. Whereas a naturist, the act of being nude is...well...natural. That doesn't imply that a naturist must commune with nature in order to be a naturist. It just means that being nude makes them feel more natural. It's a state of mind. Not a lifestyle.
NOTE: I don't give a damn what some political definition is. This is just how I interpret the difference between two terms. I use the interchangeably. I don't view one as slang for the other or any nonsense like that.
Off topic, but several people brought up the connection between s----l drive and nudism. Then proceed to condemn those who make a connection S-- and nudism. I personally don't care if the motivation for some people to be nude arises from a s----l drive. Be it exhibitionism or gawking at others. I don't condemn them. I view that side of nudism as completely natural. Be honest. People gawk and stare at other people whether they're clothed or not. To me, s----l drive has nothing to do with being nude. Now granted, being nude enhances that perception, but it also desensitizes the urge as well. Frequent nudists know what I mean. Saying that, I wish the nudist PRUDES would get off their high and mighty perch when they cut down erections, or public affection. One could argue that love is natural. It's like the nudists that argue against prudes in society. Don't like to see nude people, then don't look. Same goes in the nudist world. Don't want to see a man's erection, don't look! I'll agree that some forms of public affection can be over the top and ---------- should be used. Public affection done with good taste can be quite beautiful, and with the right state of mind, an all natural experience. Do I partake in such activities? Um, no, but why should people get their feathers ruffled if others do?

I haven't read the dictionary so i'm just going by my own thoughts but naturist seems like somebody wants to be nude outdoors to be in touch with nature. Nudist seems like somebody who likes being nude even if its indoors or in a car:)

`The way I have usually heard it, nudists are specifically about being nude, whereas naturists want to be allowed to wear clothes or not as the situation and their mood calls for. I always did have a problem with those nudist resorts which specify that they are not clothing-optional; to me, this is denying others the freedom to make a choice we have insisted on having for ourselves.

`Nudist or naturalist once again! A naturalist implies doing things in a natural way. I know several naturalist that are not Nudist, though many are. Almost all naturalist insist on growing some of their own food. Some naturalists will go as far as making their own homes out of all "natural" materials, in one case I personally know of out of mud bricks. Some will say it's a life style, like getting away from all the technology. And in another case some will live in trees, though I've only heard of that not seen it.
And yes all of these people call themselves "Naturalists". To me it's all just a life style. Neither wrong or right.
